Christopher Columbus's Journal
(The mcgraw-hill companies)
Christopher Columbus kept a journal while he was at sea to write about his voyage. Having Columbus’s journal allows people to know what all went on in more detail. It also allows people to know what really happened while he was at sea. His journal was called I, Columbus My Journal~1492-93. They “. . . have taken passages from this log to create a story as eventful and amazing as the journey itself” (Peter & Connie, 1990). Now remember, this voyage was a very long one which had “Christopher Columbus and eighty-nine men set sail on a voyage to the unknown” (Peter & Connie, 1990, p. 12). The complaining started on September 24, 1492 which means they had only been exploring for less than two months. They were starting to complain about how they would never return to their homes. They still had a lot of travels ahead of them. These fears and complaints were starting to get a little out of control. Not only were the men on board complaining, they were starting to become suicidal.
On October 12, 1492, he finally arrived to what he thought was Asia, but it was the Bahamas. He then sailed to Cuba where he thought was China or Japan. While he was traveling, his boat, Santa Maria was wrecked, which left him with only two ships (“Christopher columbus”). Not even realizing what he had done, Columbus rediscovered the Americas. “Columbus made three more voyages to the Americas for Spain. He visited Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Trinidad, and on his third trip he traveled along the coast of South America” (Maestro & Maestro, 1991, p.28). Even though he was wrong about some of his voyages, he was named “The Great Navigator” (Maestro & Maestro, 1991, p.29). He showed people that it is possible to sail across the sea. “He wanted to reach India and Southeast Asia to trade for silk and spices. He decided he could find a shorter route by sailing west, all the way around the globe, to get there” (Cale, 2005).
