My Reflection
I chose to do my content knowledge project on Christopher Columbus: Christopher Columbus Day should he be acknowledged. I first completed the brainstorming web to get all my ideas together. This is where I decided I would talk about Christopher Columbus's life, his voyages, and if Christopher Columbus Day should be celebrated. I then decided to explain how he treated the natives and his relationship with them. After that, I completed the outline. This is where I started to find more details about the ideas I was going to include in my project. I also starting to find the sources I was going to include. Doing this outline allowed me to get a lot of ideas and thoughts together. It made creating my project easier because I was organized. Being organized helps me keep all my ideas together so I know where to put them. I worked very hard on this project. I did a lot of research on the internet and read a lot of book to gather all kinds of information about Christopher Columbus.
This project is based on two elementary standards:
-1.H.1 Understand that history tells a story of how people and events changed society over time.
-1.H.1.3 Explain why national holidays are celebrated (Constitution Day, Independence Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Presidents’ Day, etc.)
It is important to teach students about Christopher Columbus. He was a very important figure that is important to America. It is also important to explain why Christopher Columbus Day is celebrated and why peoople do not want to celebrate it. Students need to realize what people did to discover America and how much they impact the country we live in today.
One thing I did not realize is that there are some people who belive that Columbus Day should not be celebrated. After doing research I found a couple of reasons why people do not celebrate it. There is some controversy that comes with celebrating Columbus Day. Some people did not like how Christopher Columbus treated the natives. He was very cruel to them. He also brought many diseases to America like influenza and smallpox. This also made people really upset with him. I want my students to realize that they can have their own opinion about whether they believe Christopher Columbus Day should be celebrated.
Being a teacher means you have of to do a lot of research on the topic you teach because you have to be knowledgable. Social Studies is a very hands on subject and can be fun for students to learn about. With this Weebly website, I will teach my students about Christopher Columbus and how he impacted America. I will also talk about Columbus Day and why it is celebrated. This is a website that has great pictures for the students to look at and reference while I am teaching them.
I really enjoyed doing this project. I learned so much about Christopher Columbus and about Christopher Columbus Day. Like I mentioned before, I did not realize that people did not like celebrating Columbus Day. This project was very beneficial and it helped me know how much research I need to do before I teach my students. I love learning something new and doing projects like this allows you to learn new things. I also learned that it took him awhile to get started on his voyage. I did not realize that it took him eight years to get the approval from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.
